Courses

Course Description:

Students will learn to nurture their creative-self, strengthen critical thinking skills, explore creative problem solving, and discover new forms of expression.  All classes are project based, rigorous, and hands-on.  Classes will consist of short and long term projects.  Visual presentations, demonstrations, and discussion will introduce each major project.   Students will explore a variety of mediums (art supplies) as they develop foundational art skills and knowledge.  Sketchbook assignments will be utilized to further individual creative investigations.  Group critiques and individual reflections will be used to assess students’ attainment of project objectives.

Courses:  Meet twice every six-day cycle for one semester. (Approximately 36-38 classes.)

 

Grade 6 – Art Foundations
·         Enduring Understanding:  Artists share a common language and knowledge of the Elements and Principles of Art & Design for use in making and appreciating art.

·         Essential Question: How do artists use the Elements and Principles of Art & Design to improve their artwork?

·         Objective:  Students will gain a strong foundation and understanding of the Elements and Principles of Design to support their future artistic endeavors.  Students will develop their craft in a variety of mediums through long-term projects and sketchbook assignments.

 

Grade 7 – Sculpture
·         Enduring Understanding:  Sculpture is a form of art that works in three dimensions by using a variety of materials in conjunction with the Elements and Principles of Art & Design

·         Essential Question: How do artists use the tactile qualities of sculpture as a vehicle for expression?

·         Objective:  Students will develop fundamental sculpture skills to create expressive three-dimensional objects, while guided by the Elements and Principles of Design. Students will develop their craft in a variety of mediums through long-term projects and sketchbook assignments.

 

Grade 8 – Advanced 2D Media
·         Enduring Understanding:  2D media are forms of art that work in two dimensions by using a variety of material in conjunction with the Elements and Principles of Art & Design.

·         Essential Question: How do artists use the wide range of drawing, painting, printmaking, etc. materials as a vehicle for expression?

·         Objective:  Students will develop advanced 2D media skills to create expressive two-dimensional artworks, while guided by the Elements and Principles of design. Students will develop their craft in a variety of mediums through long-term projects and sketchbook assignments.

 

Elective (grade 8) – Stop Motion Animation
·         Enduring Understanding:  Stop motion is a labor-intensive animation technique where static (still) objects appear to be moving.  Artist’s animation concepts are developed through storyboards, sculpting/drawings, and brought to life with technology.

·         Essential Question: How can artists merge technology with new and old means of making to tell a story through stop motion animation?

·         Objective:  Students will develop introductory stop motion animations skills using the Zu3D app on their iPad to create original stop motion animation films that will be showcased in a Seesaw digital portfolio.
